Home > What are QuaintVillages, OldeTownes, etc.

What is a QuaintVillage?

QuaintVillage is our name for a small picturesque town or village with art, history, charm, high-quality shops, local culture, and easy parking.  QuaintVillages usually have bed and breakfast inns, museums, annual festivals, antique shops, art galleries, and other tourist attractions.  Many QuaintVillages are so small that they do not appear on some road maps.  Some are off the beaten path, but most prosper because of their proximity to major highways, cities, beaches, or other popular areas.  We have tried to list only those that are worth going out of the way to visit.

What is an OldeTowne?

OldeTowne is our name for the historic district in a city or major suburb that has been developed for tourism.  OldeTownes usually have preserved historic structures, museums, trolley buses or horse-drawn carriage tours, fine shops and restaurants, inns or hotels, and visitor information centers.  Parking may be a little difficult, but these unique places are worth the hassle.

Caution!  Some cities have decided only recently to develop their historic districts for tourism.  These locations are big on advertising, but don't have much to offer the connoisseur yet.  Be sure to check our recommendations.  We like to hear what fellow travelers think about our QuaintVillages and Oldetownes.

What is a HistoricTown?

HistoricTown is our name for a small town that has a historical heritage but is not fully developed for tourism.  HistoricTowns may have museums, restored structures, historic markers, and other features of interest history buffs.  Look for additional QuaintPlaces nearby when planning a visit.

What is a QuietTown?

QuietTown is our name for an ordinary business-as-usual Mayberry that has some feature to offer the traveler, but is not geared primarily to tourism.  Look for additional QuaintPlaces nearby when planning a trip.

What is a PitStop?

This is just a place to stop while you are en route to QuaintPlaces.  A PitStop is usually a single point of interest, worth seeing, that can enrich your traveling experience.

What is a ScenicDrive?

This is a route through unspoiled countryside, forest, canyon, waterway, or other landscape.  It is usually a quiet journey that includes scenic vistas, historic sites, or quaint hamlets.

Why shop online?

Prices and selection are often better from these Web sites than in your
neighborhood stores.  Many of them offer free packing and shipping to
your door or to your gift recipient.  So, you can save time, gas, and
money.  Merchant sites must meet high security standards to advertise
on QuaintPlaces.com.

Did you know?

When you place an order from these merchants, they contribute a small
commission to QuaintPlaces.com.  These commissions do not increase
the cost of your purchases.  Only purchases made within a few days
after your initial "click" to their sites generate commissions for us.
(Please do not delete your cookies.)

These commissions, plus sales of our own photos and cards, are
necessary to help defray the cost of maintaining QuaintPlaces.com,
which currently operates at a loss.

Your purchases will help us provide more information and photos about
quaint places.
