This
college town may have been the first settlement in West Virginia, sometime
before 1730. Thomas Shepherd was the first landowner, but the town was
originally named Mecklenburg. In 1787,
James Rumsey gave his first public exhibition of his steamboat here, and a
monument commemorates the event.

Today,
Shepherdstown is known for its original arts and crafts. You will also
find museums, boutiques, and cafes tucked in the
preserved historic buildings. Most of the shops are on German Street, but
we
found a
couple that are not. Don't overlook O'Hurleys on Route 230
near the railroad tracks. It looks like a hardware store at
first,
but is surprisingly eclectic.
Parking meters are in use on
German Street
most of the time, but Shepherdstown
is definitely small and quaint. The
library stands in the middle of a street. One of the hotels has a
distinctly Bavarian design.
