Leavenworth
calls itself a "Bavarian Village." The Cascade Mountains,
the half-timber and plaster architecture, the lederhosen worn by the
German shopkeepers, the Edelweiss Hotel, the cuisine, the merchandise in
the shops, and the festivals all work together to give visitors a unique
alpine experience. (Unique, that is, unless you have also been to
Bavaria or Helen,
Georgia.)
Leavenworth
was established in 1893 as a lumber town. The mill closed in the 1920s and
the railroads left. It was nearly vacant in the 1950s. Tourism
became the main industry after the buildings were remodeled in the
Bavarian style in the 1970s.
Today,
there are no neon or backlit signs, and the power lines are hidden
underground. Even the Safeway and McDonald's restaurant look
Bavarian. Leavenworth attracts 900,000 visitors a year.

Why
shop online?
Prices
and selection
are often better
from these Web
sites than in your
neighborhood stores. Many
of them offer
free packing and
shipping to
your
door or to your
gift recipient. So,
you can save
time, gas, and
money. Merchant
sites must
meet high security
standards to
advertise
on QuaintPlaces.com.

Did
you know?
When
you place an
order from these
merchants, they
contribute a small
commission to QuaintPlaces.com. These
commissions
do not increase
the cost of your
purchases. Only
purchases
made within a few
days
after
your
initial "click" to
their sites generate
commissions for us.
(Please do not delete your cookies.)
These
commissions, plus sales of our
own photos and cards, are
necessary
to help defray the
cost of maintaining QuaintPlaces.com,
which currently
operates at a loss.
Your
purchases will
help us provide
more
information
and photos about
quaint places.
