New
Oxford, founded in 1792, is a small attractive town just east of
Gettysburg. It was a stop on both the stagecoach route and the
railroad line between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Today, the
town square is quiet most of the year except for the steady stream
of traffic on Route 30. But, it has not forgotten its
past. Many of the town's old buildings have been preserved,
including the train station. There are several several nice
shops and B&Bs near the town square. A few blocks away,
you will find antiques malls with literally hundreds of dealers.
The
railroad station is actually a museum operated by the model railroad
club. It is only open the first and third Sundays of the
month, April-December. Admission is free. |
