Cannon
Beach was named for a cannon from the shipwrecked USS Shark, which
washed ashore in 1846. The best-known landmark here is
Haystack Rock. It is very large (235 feet tall), and is a
protected "marine garden." There are other large
rocks, tidal caves, and forests. The entire area is very
scenic. The fine-sand beach is wide and flat, and the sand
castle contests are lots of fun.
The
shops are close to the beach and parking is free. This is a
popular destination, so hotels are more expensive here than in
nearby towns.
