Old Salem, North Carolina

(a QuaintVillage)

Travel attraction lodging dining unique gifts royalty-free stock photography

Salem was settled in 1766 by Moravians, who believed in hard work and appreciated art, music, and fine craftsmanship.  The nearby town of Winston was founded in 1849.  The two communities merged in 1913.  Restoration of the original Salem settlement began in 1950.

Today, Winston-Salem known as "City of the Arts."  It has a strong arts council, an arts district downtown, some good museums, and Wake University.  Old Salem, is it's gem.  This quaint village is a living history museum with brick sidewalks, restored buildings, live demonstrations by costumed interpreters, authentic food and crafts, and shows and other special events.  Tickets or passes are required to enter many historic buildings and demonstrations in Old Salem.  But, if you are in a hurry, there is no admission charge to walk the streets, enjoy the ambience, shop, or go to the restaurants.  The Brookstown Mill is within walking distance of Old Salem.  It has a B&B inn and visitor center.

The arts district is a few blocks away.  This and Old Salem are both in the heart of the city.  So, consider visiting on Saturday when the traffic is not as heavy.

Why shop online?

Prices and selection are often better from these Web sites than in your
neighborhood stores.  Many of them offer free packing and shipping to
your door or to your gift recipient.  So, you can save time, gas, and
money.  Merchant sites must meet high security standards to advertise
on QuaintPlaces.com.

Did you know?

When you place an order from these merchants, they contribute a small
commission to QuaintPlaces.com.  These commissions do not increase
the cost of your purchases.  Only purchases made within a few days
after your initial "click" to their sites generate commissions for us.
(Please do not delete your cookies.)

These commissions, plus sales of our own photos and cards, are
necessary to help defray the cost of maintaining QuaintPlaces.com,
which currently operates at a loss.

Your purchases will help us provide more information and photos about
quaint places.
