We enjoyed our visit to Sleepy Hollow
in 2002, although the town needed better signs and maps for tourists.
There were signs directing us to Philipsburg Manor. Parking was free in
the Philipsburg parking lot, but the rest of the town had meters. The
building new this lot turned out
to be the town visitors center and the departure point for tours of the Rockefeller
estate
as well.
There were no good maps to the Old
Dutch Church and the site of the old bridge, both mentioned in
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but they turned out to be within walking distance
of the visitors center. We couldn't find Washington Irving's grave, in the large cemetery, but we
had heard that it is there. We did see the grave stones from which Irving
drew the names of several characters in
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow near the church.
Lynhurst Mansion in
neighboring Tarrytown and
Sunnyside (Washington Irving's farm), in Irvington, are not far from the town
of Sleepy Hollow. Irving also wrote Rip Van Winkle.
Many people who live in the Hudson
River valley commute to New York City, so traffic may be particularly heavy
during weekday rush hours. Avoid the Tappan Zee bridge on I-87. We hear
that it is always backed up. We found I-84 and the Taconic Parkway to be good
during non-rush hours.
