Vicksburg was
Mississippi's largest city during the Civil War. It was called the
"Gibraltar of the Confederacy." The 47-day siege and fall
of Vicksburg in 1863, one day after the battle of Gettysburg, was pivotal
in that War. Today, the National Battlefield and the historic
mansions are Vicksburg's major attractions.
Comprising 1,856
acres, the battlefield and cemetery are very large. They surround
the town and contain 1300 monuments and markers, some of which are quite
large themselves. The battlefield is an attractive landscape laces
with trenches, tunnels, and earthworks, and dotted with cannons. You
can also visit the restored Union gunboat USS Cairo, a visitors center,
and costumed interpreters.
In town, the
antebellum mansions and homes display a wide variety of architectural
styles. Many played rolls in the war. Many are B&Bs or
offer tours, especially during the Pilgrimages. The old courthouse
(1858) and some of the other historic buildings are now museums.
Coca-Cola was first bottled here in the 1890s.
