Natchez is one of the oldest
towns on the Mississippi River. The antebellum plantations,
mansions, and homes perched high on the bluff are the primary attraction
here. There are more of these nestled among the live oaks here than anywhere else. They
have been restored, nicely painted, and groomed. Many are B&Bs,
and many offer tours, especially during the annual spring and fall
Pilgrimages. This is when you will see the hoop skirts and other
period costumes often portrayed in photographs. The profuse azaleas, dogwoods, wisteria, magnolias,
gardenias, crepe myrtles, and camellias add to the color and charm.
Downtown, along the river bank,
you will find a few nice shops and restaurants. Parking is
free. If your timing is right, you will see the Mississippi Queen, a large sternwheeler
(paddle-wheel cruise boat) that stops in Natchez.
