Thurmont calls itself "Gateway to the
Mountains." It has a few quaint shops and is quiet most of the
year. But, each October the entire town is transformed for Catoctin
Colorfest, which draws exhibitors and visitors from the entire region.
You can even ride a historic
train to Colorfest from Washington D.C., College Park and other stops.
You will need an entire day to see every booth in this festival, and you
will do a lot of walking. Regular visitors often pull wagons full of
kids and purchases. Crafts and food range widely in type and quality.
There are many juried crafters.
Don't miss the
quaint features outside of town, especially Cunningham
Falls, Stone Fence Gardens,
Catoctin
Wildlife Preserve and Zoo, the covered bridges, the Visitor Center at Catoctin
National Park, and the Maryland
Mountain Festival.

Why
shop online?
Prices
and selection
are often better
from these Web
sites than in your
neighborhood stores. Many
of them offer
free packing and
shipping to
your
door or to your
gift recipient. So,
you can save
time, gas, and
money. Merchant
sites must
meet high security
standards to
advertise
on QuaintPlaces.com.
|
Did
you know?
When
you place an
order from these
merchants, they
contribute a small
commission to QuaintPlaces.com. These
commissions
do not increase
the cost of your
purchases. Only
purchases
made within a few
days
after
your
initial "click" to
their sites generate
commissions for us.
(Please do not delete your cookies.)
These
commissions, plus sales of our
own photos and cards, are
necessary
to help defray the
cost of maintaining QuaintPlaces.com,
which currently
operates at a loss.
Your
purchases will
help us provide
more
information
and photos about
quaint places.
