Middletown, Maryland
(a
HistoricTown)
|
Within
commuting distance of Washington D.C. and Frederick Maryland, Middletown is small
but growing. It was once a stop on the National Pike, one of America's first roads. The
Pike carried pioneers
and goods from Baltimore to the frontier. Sections of the old road, now Route
40, are
still in use and make an interesting drive trip through Maryland, Pennsylvania,
Ohio, and beyond.
Several battles of the
Civil War were fought in and around Middletown. We were told that both
President Rutherford Hayes and William McKinley were wounded at the Battle of
South Mountain near here.
Middletown
has a few nicely
painted Victorian homes today. You will also find a bed and breakfast inn
and a few other small businesses that interest travelers (see list below).
For a good lunch stop at Hagan's Tavern on
Route 40 between Middletown and Frederick. This historic stone house is
next door to an antiques shop. Reservations may be required for dinner.

money. Merchant
sites must
meet high security
standards to
advertise
on QuaintPlaces.com.
