Chesapeake
City, Maryland
(a
QuaintVillage)

attraction lodging dining unique gifts royalty-free stock photography
Despite
its name, Chesapeake City is a tiny Victorian town that was
known as "The Village of Bohemia" until 1839. After
a white-knuckle drive across the very high two-lane bridge over the
Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, we parked in the free parking lot
under the bridge and easily walked to everything. We heard
that parking can be hard to find on Saturday nights. We
visited Chesapeake City on a
June weekend in 2005 when the town provided free horse-drawn carriage
rides and every house and shop had well-maintained flower boxes
under the windows. At least one resident artist and one
resident photographer have shops here. Another shop carried
fair trade* crafts from around the world. The
canal is a modern active passage connecting the Delaware River and
the Chesapeake Bay. It looks like a river here and is used
by commercial cargo vessels as well as pleasure craft.
Before 1919, however, the canal was small and had wooden locks and
mule-drawn barges. Chesapeake City
is near several other QuaintPlaces: Havre
de Grace, North East, New
Castle, and the Brandywine
Valley. This area is a good weekend getaway from
Baltimore, Wilmington, or Philadelphia. |
