Dahlonega, Georgia, USA

Dahlonega is one of those ideal small tourist towns that has made tourism a priority. The town square has a museum in the center and is surrounded by preserved historic buildings that are now shops and restaurants. The drug stores and laundrymats are somewhere else. There is a nice variety of nearby attractions. The shops are open all weekend and have plenty of free parking behind them.

At an elevation of 1500 feet, Dahlonega gets 3 or 4 snows each winter. Historians know Dahlonega as the site of the first major gold rush in the U.S, that preceded the gold rush in California. It is also a college town (North Georgia College and State University).

Amicalola Falls are a bit of a drive and a hike, but quite spectacular.
