Apalachicola,
Florida
(a
QuaintVIllage)
|
Florida calls this stretch of
coastline the "forgotten coast." If you drive through the
downtown historic district of Apalachicola before the shops open, you may
think you are in a forgotten town as well. This is probably due to a serious
historic preservation effort. There are no new
facades or large signs. But when the shops and cafes open and
people begin to stream in, you realize that the you are in the best place
to shop for art, crafts, and antiques for miles around.
Apalachicola
harvests 90 percent of Florida's oysters. It was home to Dr. John
Gorrie, who invented the ice machine in 1848. The soda fountain was built in
1905 and still serves food and drink the old fashioned way. The
print shop still uses an old letter press. Make friends with Buddy,
the cat in charge of one of the book shops. Apalachicola may be a
little out of the way, but it is worth the trip.
