Skagway,
Alaska
(A
QuaintVillage)
|
Tlingit
natives gave Skagway its name. The first non-native settler
was Buddy Moore (1887), who is said to have discovered the White Pass
route into Canada. Skagway exploded into a town after gold was
discovered in the Klondike in 1897 and became the first incorporated city
in Alaska in 1900. The White Pass and Yukon Railroad was the first
railroad in Alaska. It was constructed in 1898 to transport supplies
to Whitehorse, Yukon. After the gold rush ended in 1900, Skagway was
almost deserted.
Today,
cruise ships and tour buses bring many tourists to this small town.
The gold rush-era buildings have been restored.
