Sitka,
Alaska
(A
QuaintVillage)
|
Sitka
was Czarist Russia's capital of Alaska before statehood, and its Russian heritage
has been well preserved. However, the native Tlingit
people were here long before the Russians, and their culture is alive
in Sitka today as well. (Tlinkit is usually pronounced cling-kit.)
Sitka sits on
Baranof Island. Mt. Edgecumbe (3,201 feet), an extinct
volcano that resembles Mt. Fuji, provides the backdrop for this
picturesque setting. You
must get to Sitka by air or by boat. Ferry boats travel the scenic
Inside Passage along the Alaska Marine Highway among the many islands,
towns, and lighthouses in this region. Many visitors also arrive by cruise
ship and private yacht, crowding Sitka all summer.
