Ketchikan,
Alaska
(A
QuaintVillage)
|
Ketchikan
is the southern-most town in Alaska and Alaska's fourth largest
town. It is known as Alaska's First City,
because you reach it first as you travel north into Alaska. It is
also called the salmon capital of the world and the city of totems. It claims to have the world's
largest collection of totem poles (Tlingit and Haida native culture).
This rustic town was a supply depot during
the gold rush. Ketchikan is built on the side of a steep hill, and is 3 miles long
by 3 blocks wide. Many cruise ships stop here.
The shopping is great, especially along Creek Street.
